Let’s rewind—way back. We’re talking corsets, coal lamps, and the pre-Spotify era. Believe it or not, salt therapy didn’t start in some fancy wellness lounge with mood lighting and chill beats. Nope. The original spa was underground. Literally.

1840s: When Breathing Salt Wasn't a Vibe… It Was a Job

Salt therapy, also known as halotherapy, first got noticed in the 1840s in Poland. A physician named Dr. Felix Bochkowsky (bless his salty soul) observed that salt miners in the Wieliczka Salt Mine weren’t experiencing the same respiratory issues as other miners. They were healthier. Less coughing. Clearer lungs. Fewer sick days. While other folks were out catching consumption and vibing to harpsichord music, these miners were accidentally living their best lungs-ever lives.

The theory? All that salty air they were breathing underground was doing something magical.

This sparked curiosity, and by the mid-20th century, salt caves and mines were being used intentionally for therapeutic purposes across Europe.

Enter the 1980s: Big Hair, Bigger Wellness Evolution

Fast-forward to the 1980s—when neon ruled, shoulder pads soared, and Madonna told us to express ourselves. Wellness started getting a little glossier. Instead of heading into the depths of the earth for therapy, innovators started replicating the microclimate of those salt mines above ground.

Cue the invention of the halogenerator (think: a fog machine, but make it salty). It crushes pharmaceutical-grade sodium chloride into tiny breathable particles and disperses them in a controlled room—like our Totally Salty lounge. No helmets. No pickaxes. Just pure vibes.

Science Meets Style

Today, salt therapy has evolved into a legit, science-backed wellness practice used to support:

  • Respiratory health (asthma, allergies, COPD)

  • Skin conditions (eczema, acne)

  • Immune and mood support

Totally...the Spa takes it even further—blending medical roots with music-video energy. You’ll still breathe in the same purifying salt mist that helped 19th-century miners thrive, but now you get to do it on a lounge chair under LED lights while Duran Duran plays softly in the background. Iconic.

Why It Matters

Knowing the why behind what we do is part of our DNA. We don’t just offer salt therapy because it sounds cool (though it totally does). We believe in honoring its history, grounding our practice in real science, and delivering it with a wink, a playlist, and a pink neon sign.

So next time you step into our salt lounge, remember—you’re not just relaxing. You’re stepping into a time-traveling, lung-loving tradition that’s spanned centuries and still slaps.

Catch your breath—and your glow—the old-school way.

Catch you on the flip side,
